Just serviced, this very well specified and highly regarded early 90s CD player is in excellent physical condition, tested and in full working order. This sounds lovely, playing our badly scratched test CDR without missing a beat.
The very common and almost guaranteed problem with these early Philips/Marantz mechanisms is the failure of the drawer loading pulley/cog. If this part has never been changed, even if it still appears to operate correctly, it’s really only a matter of time before it fails. With this in mind we always replace these pulley/cogs with brand new parts prior to sale, so you can be sure this problem won’t be happening any time soon. As a matter of course we also replace the loading belt. The last picture shows what was removed from this machine, before new parts were installed.
